Leaving "not applicable" answers out when calcula

Postby EdeGroot » Mon Oct 29, 2007 8:04 pm

:? I have several questions in my survey with a "not applicable" category. When I want to calculate with these questions I want to exclude these answers. I do not want to use "select cases" because I will lose respondents because different respondents answer "not applicable" on different questions.
I think these "not applicable" answers (with value 0) will cause problems when calculating Crombach alpha's with these questions. Therefore I have two questions:
- is it true that not applicable will cause problems for Crombach Alpha?
- if so, what might be a solution?

Thanks in advance, Esther

I don't know about the Cronbach Alpha, but did you already trying putting these values in missing? In Variable View click the Missing Cell of the variable you want to change. Select the option Discrete Missing Values and fill in the the value (0) that should be excluded in your output.

Hello,

Thanks! It works, well I did not check the Crombach but the calculations for mean etc left out the "not applicable" therefore I trust the other calculations will work ok as well.

Best wishes, Esther :D
