help needed - vlookup in SPSS?

Postby BEdaemonBE » Wed Dec 14, 2011 2:49 pm

Hi,

I am struggling a little bit with creating a new variabele in SPSS and hope that someone can point me in the right direction.

I have a large dataset (+- 1 million cases) looking a little bit like this:

v1 - ... - v7 - v8 - rrnr - rrnr refperson - ... - v10

Each line represents a person. People can belong to the same family unit (then all cases have the same rrnr refperson number). Each person has its own number 'rrnr' and a reference to the head of the family unit ('rrnr refperson').

What do i want to do?

I want to create a variabele where each case with the same score on var 'rrnr refperson' (and therefore belonging to the same family unit) gets the value of variabele of the head of the family unit.

So For ALL cases where rrnr refperson is the same --> create a new variable
value of the new variabele is equal to the value of 'rrnr' on variable v10

I Excel I would use the vlookupfunction, but because my dataset is so huge, this is not an option.

Any help or tips to get me started in SPSS - or usefull keywords to google - is really appreciated.

Using SPSS 18.0 for windows XP

Grtz,

B.

could you maybe provide a numeric example because I am not a 100 % sure what you need yet.
