Hello. I am currently working on a project for my senior seminar course and am using SPSS for my analysis. I am stumped on how to recode two different variables into one new variable. I know that I have to go to "Transform" ---> "Recode into Different Variable", but I am stuck on the logistics for my particular problem.
I administered a survey and exported the survey results into SPSS...
I have two variables - momimmigrant and dadimmigrant (the survey question asked whether or not the respondent's mom and dad, respectively, were born in the US or not.)
Both of these variables are coded in which ("1" = non-immigrant) and ( "2" = immigrant).
I want to create a new variable called "parentimmigrant" where if either the respondent's mom or dad were immigrants, then the output will show ("2" = immigrant) If both of the respondent's parents were non-immigrants then the output will how ("1"- non-immigrant).
Sorry, if this is hard to follow. I did my best to explain. Please let me know if you need any clarifications.
Thank you so much!
