6 questions into one table

Postby Blommie » Wed Oct 31, 2012 12:11 pm

Hi,
I am stuck. Please see my question below which I asked during my fieldwork:

Q: For what do you use the water in the tank? [select all that apply]
Answer: 1=gardening, 2= cooking, 3= drinking, 4=washing clothes, 5= cleaning, 6= bathing

When I captured the data onto spss, I've put each question seperate.
E.g in the variable view, the question is: Do you use the water for gardening? Yes = 1, No = 2;
Do you use the water for cooking? Yes=1, No = 2
etc.

I would like to present my data in a table format saying " 40% of respondents use rainwater for gardening, 10%drinking ..."
At the moment my tables are for all seperate, I want one table with all 6 variables in a table format.
My question to the forum is: how do I put this into one table using spss?

I hope my question makes sense and that you can help me.
thanks

I hope to hear from you soon.

Use Analyze > Descriptive, and the drag all your 6 variables into a table. Then check the means, if it's 1.45, 45% of the people said "No," aka 55% of the people said "Yes."

A less convoluted way is to recode your yes/no variable so that yes = 1 and no = 0. Then the mean will really represent the percentage saying "Yes."
