Intergenerational linkage in SPSS

Postby fredder » Sat Nov 15, 2014 9:46 pm

New to forum

Working on intergenerational obesity project using UK Health Survey for England data.

Each household surveyed is identified with a household serial, there are separate cases for two adults and up to two children.

I'm investigating transmission from adults to children. I need to create a binary variable for child cases which denotes if the mother is obese.

I've already derived a variable for obesity in the mother

So I'm trying to compute on the child cases:

Match child case with mother and code variable as 1 if she is obese

Conceptually something like:

IF Household ID matches Household ID AND Sex = Female AND Natural Parent=1 AND AdultObese=1 , MotherObese=1

I've tried and failed for most of day, but my syntax isn't great

Any pointers greatly appreciated

what is not yet clear is how your data is set up, this information is needed to answer your question.
For isntance, is there one file that holds all data?
How do you know what "case" is mother and what case is child?
Etc.
