Use Mahalanobis distance for matching

Postby briehl » Fri Jan 10, 2014 1:50 am

Hi there,

I am a student at the University of British Columbia, completing an undergraduate thesis which involves the analysis of household survey data for Namibia. I am wondering if it is possible to use SPSS to complete Mahalanobis distance matching of households based on a number of variables. More specifically, I have a number of households in one group "in conservancy", and a much larger number of households in another group "not in conservancy" and I would like to match each "in conservancy" household to a "non-conservancy" household based on a number of variables (including precipitation, vegetation, elevation, distance to nearest town, etc.). Calculating the Mahalanobis distance in SPSS gives me a number for each household, and I am unsure of whether it is possible to use these numbers to match households?

Thank you,
