Creating a variable that's dependent on a binomial variable

Postby dutchguy » Fri Nov 03, 2017 1:36 pm

Hi,

Currently, I'm rewriting my manual codebook into an SPSS file. I'm not necessarily new to SPSS, but somehow I'm trying to figure out how and if it's necessary to enter a variable that's dependent on another binomial variable.

The binomial variable (X) is a YES/NO question (yes=1, no=0). Only if the coder enters a (1=YES), he/she should answer another question (Y), which asks to list one or multiple answers from a list of categories ( e.g. 'a', or 'b, c, d').

Is there an easy way to define this, or is it redundant? (as I can already draw the conclusion that answers to question Y pertain to if X=1.

Thanks in advance!
