I am relatively new with using SPSS and would appreciate your help.

Having said that, I would like to ask if anyone knows how to enter the data from a card sorting study in SPSS (v13) and analyze them with clustering algorithms (produce dendrograms etc).

Briefly stated, in a card sorting participants are given cards showing some content with no pre-established groupings. They are asked to sort cards into groups that they feel are appropriate and then describe each group.

From the groupings of the participants a similarity matrix is contructed, showing how often each pair of cards have been placed together by all participants. For example for 3 cards and 5 participants that could be something like:

Code: Select all

```
Card1 Card2 Card3
Card1 0 4 5
Card2 4 0 2
Card3 5 2 0
```

**Questions**

Can you please tell me how i should enter the data in SPSS to use Classify later on?

Which is the variable and which is the case?

Do I simply enter the frequencies matrix as is?

**What i want to do**

1) cluster the cards and create a dendrogram

2) define the "optinal" number of clusters based on the Elbow Criterion - (see Wikipedia - Cluster Analysis since I am not allowed by the forum to post the link yet ). I assume i need to use factor analysis and the scree plot?? since i cant see any related option under the classify of the SPSS...)

Thanks in advance to anyone who invests his time on this!
