problem with missing values when importing dbf

Postby Tamira » Wed Oct 10, 2012 6:09 pm

Working on a Mac OSX using SPSS 20.

I have created a database file in Filemaker Pro and then exported the records as a dbf so that I can open it in SPSS.

All looks great when I open it EXCEPT some fields that were empty in the dbf are treated as missing values in SPSS (which is what I want to happen) while others are simply blank fields (no "." to indicate a missing value) and are summed when I do analyses (which I do NOT want to happen). These are string variables.

A second and potentially related problem is that I have a numeric variable where blank fields (which should be missing values) are automatically turned into zeros.

Not sure if this is pertinent, but it so happens that the fields that SPSS considers missing values are in a variable that has no data in any cell (yet - but I expect some of the cells will at some point), whereas the blank cells belong to variables with data in some cells.

Ideas as to why this is happening and how I might fix it?
