Calculating total effect

Postby PaulBreuer » Thu Jun 22, 2017 8:53 am

Hello guys!

I have a verry easy question, however, it means a great deal to me if you could help me answer it as it is important for graduating on my master thesis.

the siutation i have is the followings:

direct effect: β = .21, p < .01 = significant
indirect effect 1: β .01, CI= -.03 to .08 = Not significant
indirect effect 2: β = -.19, CI= -.28 to .-11 = significant

What do I include in calculating the total effect?

Formula is ofcource: total effect = direct effect + indirect effects

Must I also include the insignificant indirect effect 1 in this calculation?
Such that total effect becomes: (.21 + .01 +- .19) = 0.03

OR should i not include the insignificant indirect effect 1.
Such that the total effect becomes: (.21 +- .19) = 0.02

Thank you so, so much!!
