This command is not permitted before the beginning of file..

In my dataset, there are a number of string variables which I recoded into quantitative variables. This process went fine. But my professor wants me to adjust the length of the new quantitative variables using syntax. I tried using the syntax: "formats Variable (f1)" but I keep getting an error message that says "This command is not permitted before the beginning of file definition commands." What am I doing wrong? What is the correct syntax to adjust the width of the variables?

Hi statsgirl!

I usually get that message if I don't have any data open in SPSS and I try to run commands.

Anyway, what exactly does your professor aim at? If he refers to the way numbers are shown (decrease number of decimals), then your syntax seems correct. Note that you can refer to multiple variables here, as in

Code: Select all

for v1 to v100(f1).
