Chi squared post hoc confusion

Postby floodp » Sat Feb 16, 2013 3:29 am

Hi there, I am comparing males and females in terms of a categorical response variable. While the pearson chi square value seems significant p=.018, I am unable to see where the differences lie as all standardised residuals lie between -1.96 and 1.96. Not sure what the forum rules are on posting output so I have summarised below. Am I interpreting this incorrectly? Thanks in advance!

yes definitely - Males, 23.6%, Std. Residual=-1.0 | Females, 26.3%, Std. Residual=.9
yes somewhat - Males, 5.9%, Std. Residual=1.9 | Females, 3.7%, Std. Residual=-1.6
No - Males, 70.6%, Std. Residual=.1 | Females, 70.0%, Std. Residual=-.1

Pearson Chi-Square-8.040, 2, .018
