When conducting a multiway frequency analysis using HILOGLINEAR, one needs to specify for each variable what the range of categories is, i.e the dichotomous variable "urban" has two categories, 0 = not urban and 1 = urban. The systems asks the user to specify only the lowest and highest value in the category choices, so I enter 0 for lowest and 1 for highest. But what do I do with a variable which has an additional category for "Don't know/missing value" that's coded as "9", in a list of 5 categories, for example. Take an education variable, for example, which has the category values 1 through 5 for various education levels, but then a 9 for DK/Missing? Technically there are 6 categories, but if I enter 1 for the lowest category value and 9 for the highest, SPSS will assume there are 9 categories. How do I get around this problem?? Thanks for any advice!
