Statistical power & power calculation in SPSS

Postby Yihui » Wed Aug 13, 2008 3:33 pm

Hello,

I would like to know why researchers conventionally set statistical power as 0.8 in order to see how many subjects should be further included to reach statistical significance.
On Aug, 7, I asked another question regarding how SPSS obtains the observed power in repeated measure. The reason why I asked is there is always deviation in the number between which is calculated by SPSS and which is calculated by software. Can someone please tell me why this happens? Thanks!
