An ID variable for groups of cases with matching scores?

Postby raeej91 » Sun Feb 16, 2014 1:20 am

Hello all! I have a question regarding creating a unique identification number for SPSS. Specifically I was wondering how can I create a variable that assigns an unique identification number for groups of cases whose scores on a specific number of variables all match one another. I know that this is a fairly easy task to do step by step with the SPSS compute command for a set of variables that have a very small range of values, thereby limiting the total number of groups of cases exhibiting matching scores on these variables, but in my case the range of values for these variables is quite large (the groups of matching cases will total around 90,000). Any help with accomplishing this task will be much appreciated.

can you provide more specific information on type of data, what variables you want to create these groups on etc?

you can probably use syntax to do this task, but description is to vague to give concrete advice.
