Merging 3 dummy's into one variable

Postby Nielsspss » Tue May 06, 2014 12:46 pm

Hi Guys,

I just uploaded my Qualtrics data into SPSS and have a question. I used to be pretty decent at SPSS but it seems i've lost my touch..

I had 3 pictures (happy, sad and saddest) for which participants were randomly assigned. SPSS changes this into three dummy variables. For instance, someone who saw the "happy" pic has a 1 for happy and a 0 for sad and saddest.

I want to turn these three variables into one so i can start my analyses.. How do i do this again..

Thanks a bunch for help in advance. I tried to find a similar post but was unable to.. If it is mentioned before, a link would be awesome!

you can use an if funtion for this, something like:

if (happy = 1) totalvar = 1.
if (sad = 1) totalvar = 2.
if (saddest = 1) totalvar = 3.
execute.
