count cases text

Postby johannesantonius » Fri Nov 28, 2014 4:54 pm

Hi!

I hope you guys can help me out, this should be easy...

I imported the dataset from exel, and now some of the answers that have multiple choices are all packed in one variable. For example

What is your occupation? (more options possible)
- A
- B
- C
- Other:

So now I my dataset the answers are separated by comma's, all in one column, like this:

resp 1: A
resp 2: A, C
resp 3: C
resp 4: B, C, Other: Z

how can I count the number of A's in all responses?
how can I classify all 'Other' as one category?

SPSS 22

thanks!

super easy fix: can't you just go back to excel and get each value in a separate variable? that would be very easy.

if that doesn't work, look into the "index" function.
