Help! Dataset with only categorical variables, what to do?

Postby Hielke » Tue Feb 17, 2015 9:19 pm

Dear all,

At university we have to do an assignment in which we have to answer a Research Question we have made, based on a dataset of an Eurobarometer. We have to use all the following tests: crosstabs, T-tests/Anova and Factor anaysis and OLS Regression analysis; so pretty basic.
However, the dataset, Eurobarometer 80.1, only has categorical variables. As far as I know, you cant do the abovementioned tests with categorical variables, exept the crosstabs. So, am I wrong, or is there something I can do?

Kind regards,

You are right that most of the tests you mention are not meant to use with categorical data.
There are more test options available, but it also depends on your research question. Usually, crosstabs gives you what you need for categorical data though.

Hello,

Yes you are correct, cross-tabs is your only option.
Use chi-square to test your hypothesis (this will provide you with a chi-square value, df and p-value).
