How do you fix the date

Postby nooblet » Tue Oct 20, 2015 4:50 am

Hi, I have an assignment using SPSS, where we have been given a data set and need to use the data for a research question. However, there are many errors in the data (put there on purpose) and we have to fix those errors first.

The data set is based on patients in a hospital. I calculated a new variable, "length of stay" (LOS). However since some of the dates are wrong, the LOS is inaccurate for some patients. For example, it is a negative number. Here is a specific example:

Date of arrival: 30.12.2002
Date of separation: 01.01.2002.

As you can see, the year is the same when it should be the next year, 2003. This gives a LOS of -363.

I am wondering, is there a way in SPSS to check and fix errors like this? Or in general, is this data simply disposed of?

There is no way to fix this automatically in spss.
Personally, I would not use these data because you cannot be sure what the correct data "should" be, therefore it is unreliable
