Combining categorical variables

Postby costa25 » Wed Mar 23, 2016 4:08 pm

Hi,

I have two variables: Party Identification and Strength of Identification.

Party ID is measured from 1-10, where 1=cons, 2=lab, 3=lib dem and 6=ukip, with the remaining variables other parties.
Strength of identification is measured from 1-3, where 1=very srong, 2=fairly strong and 3= not very strong.

Can anyone please tell me how I can combine these two variables to get:

Labour very strong
Labour fairly strong
Labour not very strong
Conservative very strong
Conservative fairly strong
Conservative not very strong
Lib Dem very strong
Lib Dem fairly strong
Lib Dem not very strong
Ukip very strong
Ukip fairly strong
Ukip not very strong
Other

I have played around with it for a while but can't seem to find a way.

Thanks

Sorry, 2 groups of categorical variables. Essentially since there are 5 variables for party (labour, conservative etc) and 3 variables for strength of identification (strong, moderate, weak) so after combining the data I will have 12 new variables (ignoring other) that capture what party they identify with and how strongly.

Windows 10, Version 21 and my study is a college project that is looking at how TV leadership debates impact vote choice.

Thanks
