Combining categorical/dummy variables

Postby BozieOne » Thu Jun 22, 2017 2:58 pm

I have what I know is a simple question. How do I combine several categorical variables into a new variable? I have a list of academic majors (such as accounting, finance, management, marketing) all of which are categorical/dummy variables. Each major is listed separately, so my SPSS data editor reads (in separate columns) accounting major =1, finance major =1, management major =1. etc. How do I combine all of those separate majors into a new variable simply called "major" in which value label 1 = accounting, 2 = finance, 3= management, 4 = marketing?
